The Speed of Standing Still

admin | Musing | Sunday, June 21st, 2009

The Earth is spinning like a top at around 1,000 miles per hour.

It takes 365 days for the Earth to make a single 600 million mile circuit of the Sun. There’s a lot of distance to cover, which means the Earth has to travel at the astounding speed of 66,000 miles per hour to complete the circuit each year.

Our Solar System is also moving around the our Galaxy at the staggering speed of 483,000 miles per hour.

Our galaxy is moving toward an unknown something scientists have dubbed “The Great Attractor” that’s in the direction of the constellations of Leo and Virgo. Galactic speed: 1.3 million miles per hour.

Earth spin - 1,000 miles/hr
Earth around the Sun - 66,000 miles/hr
Solar System around Galaxy - 483,000 miles/hr
Galaxy toward the Great Attractor - 1.3 million miles/hr

Speed of a bullet - 680 miles/hr
