Subjective Technology
There is a new wave of technology coming
I believe we are witnessing the first wave of a new technology still in its infancy, but a wave that will surely revolutionize the 21st century in ways unknown and previously unseen. It promises empowerment for the individual and likely holds the key to many of the most pressing issues we face as individuals and as residents of this world. This new technology is not what many think it will be. It’s within a realm that has long been ignored or actively repressed. It’s the technology of subjective experience. I am completely fascinated by this and plan on writing about this topic on this blog as I follow its evolution and participate in its development.
Likely when you think tech you think of the electrical or the mechanical. Something that’s physical. You probably think of computers and gadgets. It’s easy to recognize technology in the physical as iPods and computers, space shuttles and robots. Technology has become synonymous with the physical, but it is a much, much broader concept, one that includes less physical themes such systems, techniques, or methods of organization and more ephemeral themes such as thoughts, beliefs, motivations, and frameworks of meaning. There may be many definitions, but for our purposes a simple definition will suffice: technology is the use and knowledge of tools for the control of the environment.
Objective technology
Current technology is objective technology. At present, the tools available for environmental change are quite skewed toward the objective. There are all sorts of nifty gadgets (tools) you can play music on, watch videos, access the internet, and these gadgets are getting smaller and ubiquitous. On the other side of the spectrum there ever larger ships riding the seas and ever greater particle accelerators smashing energy together at near light speeds. There are incredibly powerful processors in laptops. Medical science is rapidly creating newer and more effective drugs and treatments for disease. Biological science is beginning to alter the very structure of life through cellular manipulation. These are all very powerful and useful tools, but they are all external and objective and thus of limited use subjectively.
It’s easy enough to see that this definition contains the electrical technology we so easily recognize. These electrical and mechanical devices that allow us to control the environment. Through the flip of a switch we can have light when nature is giving us darkness. We can get in an airplane and fly to another city, even though the environment has denied us the inherent ability of flight. We can listen to music out of synch with the time period the music was made. All of these are fantastic tools created through the medium of mechanics, electronics, computers: External tools for an objective control of the environment.
But I believe that this is not what will define the 21st century, this is the technology of the 20th century maturing into this century. When we look back at this time period, we’ll see that now was the birthing of a new technology, one that could easily be mistaken as not of the realm of technology at all - the technology of personal growth and the tools of consciousness, experience and creation.
Subjective technology
The objective is very easy to recognize in our culture. We are trained exclusively in objectivity throughout our years of schooling. But if you want to understand your subjective experience, it seems you have to hole yourself away in a Buddhist monastery for many years. Thoughts are just not much thought about. Just consider the strikingly limited number of words in the average English vocabulary for drawing distinctions between thoughts, which points to a strikingly limited conversation about thinking (and emotions, states of consciousness, etc..).
The objective view considers the world from the outside to the inside, and is extremely fertile in its own domain, but then there’s another way of looking at all of this. It’s a way of looking that stands the normal world on its head. It’s a step through the looking glass and once that step is truly taken and the looking glass environment is understood, you find yourself in another dimension where all of the basic assumptions one has are forever altered. This subjective view of the world considers the world from the inside to the outside, in diametric opposition to the objective view.
The subjective view, is at the heart of this revolutionary technology: Internal tools for subjective control of the environment. These are the tools of understanding and manipulating the experience of meaning, belief, emotions, states of consciousness, creation and many other important subjective distinctions. Changing the world, by changing yourself.
This technology is already here. It’s been around for quite some time, perhaps as early as man himself, but until recently it has been hidden away in the esoteric and the occult, it has been repressed by organized religions and tyrannous governments, and it has been ignored because of it’s very nature of not being objective. Now that is all beginning to change and a huge amount is being written about and disseminated publicly under the topics of personal development, internal game, religions, the esoteric and the occult, secret societies, frameworks for reality, alternative lifestyles, business, communication… The list goes on and on. Tidbits can be found anywhere. To live at all, one must use subjective techniques, to be effective at living one must have many such tools and techniques at their command. The truly interesting changes will emerge as these topics are unified.
What we can look forward to
There are so many paths into internal development that lead to so many rewards. The internal manifests the external, as a path is pursued the internal change begets and external reality of that change. Pursuing confidence obviously alters your internal experience, but it also alters your external environment in many ways - more friends, better relationships, better career, maybe even better health. Likewise, pursuing your own inner peace will bubble out into your real world. Learning active techniques for bringing dreams into reality bridges the internal with the external at a conscious level of awareness. Removing fear and doubt seem a necessity in the world today. There are limitless possibilities. We can look forward to better lives and a better experience of that better life. By understanding the tools of internal personal development we are, at the least, sure to have an interesting life.
This is an exciting time we live in. The birthing of personal empowerment is occurring. This is an internal empowerment that has long been studied in secret. We are now seeing many of these once secret techniques being revealed and as they are revealed they are being enhanced. More importantly new distinctions are being formed and new tools for internal empowerment are being created by the pioneers in this field. These are amazing tools in that they can never be taken away once they are known.
In this blog, I’ll write about these amazing subjective tools for consciousness. I plan to cover many topics including beliefs, reality creation, consciousness, awareness, and growth, as well as many others.
